A Reframed Approach to Design

If you’ve been a follower since my NYC apartment days, then you have probably realized I have a pretty particular design style and the items I tend to gravitate towards. A mixture of picture frame molding, gallery walls, ornate detailing, sage green walls and floral wallpaper is a pretty good synopsis of what my New York apartment comprised of — it wasn’t until I began living in this new space that I realized I’d be going in a different direction.

Don’t get me wrong, I still love all of those things. But I’ve also never lived somewhere with such beautiful natural light, so much built-in historic charm and full of its own history. As I started to unpack my boxes of artwork, I realized how much I actually adore the bright and tall walls here just as they are. There are so many elements of the architecture of this space that truly speak for themselves, without needing to be cluttered up by so many “things.”

Though I had streamlined a lot of my items before coming here, I’ve had a strong desire these last two weeks to do so even more. I want every detail, big and small, to be things that make my heart sing. I’m not in a rush to fill the space for the sake of it looking pretty in photos. I want to take my time with this apartment, truly making it feel special and my own. I want to learn where the light bounces off of and arrange it based on that – or get into the flow of a routine and realize what layout makes the most sense. If you don’t see as much “renter-friendly” renovations coming from me — this is why. I truly love the bones of this space and wouldn’t want to detract from that. Instead, I’ll be leaning into adding elements and small tweaks that emphasize its original charm and beauty.

Sometimes in design, as in life, less can truly be more if it’s done with intention. I’m looking forward to creating a space of my own full of finds that bring me joy. It’s those things that inspire me to create meaningful moments at home, and make each daily ritual, from my morning cup of coffee to washing my face at night, all the more special.
