Wardrobe Selects: Winter Coats

It might be in the upper sixties today, but I’m positive there are still plenty of brutal winter days in our future. In fact, I feel like I’ve barely used my heavy coats at all so far, which has me convinced I’ll be reaching for them a lot during the next couple of months. Coats are one of those items I don’t purchase many of – I know what I like and tend to grab on a daily basis, so I invest in those classics that I know will be versatile and will get lots of wear.

Out of all of my coats, these are the five I find myself reaching for most often. If I were to build a capsule wardrobe, these are probably all I would need for most any occasion. They include a classic black peacoat (not pictured but looks like this), a longer tan coat (mine is old Ralph Lauren), a faux shearling (pictured is this one and I also have this white one), a practical puffer (shop the new version of mine here), and a more stylish parka jacket (I have last year’s version of this one).

Classic Black Coat

I wear this one with almost everything – it’s my dress coat, but it’s also the coat I throw on with leggings. Lately I’ve been pairing it with my faux leather leggings, a hoodie, and sneakers for a high/low look when running errands.

Longer Tan Coat

My FAVORITE coat in my wardrobe. Something about this coat feels so Parisian, and I am all about that! I love to pair this with pretty much any outfit, but it’s also perfect for winter weddings and over a skirt/tights outfit. The contrast of the hemlines is so chic.

Faux Shearling Coat/Teddy Coat

I consider this one my “fun” or on-trend coat. It’s also SO cozy. It’s a great coat to throw on overtop of a simple outfit to make it a little more exciting. I have a dark tan one and an off-white one, and I find myself wearing the off-white one the most. I love pairing it with an all tan or all black look!

Practical Puffer

This is the coat your mother thinks you need… and to be honest, mine bought mine for me! But it’s the most worn coat I own. It’s that perfect coat for when it’s so cold outside and all you care about is being warm. I wear it to walk the dog, to run out for coffee, and pretty much anytime it’s below freezing. Try a style that cinches in a the waist to keep it flattering.

Playful Parka

This is my least worn of the five, but still a favorite. I tend to pull it out most when we vacation somewhere cold because I want to be warm, but still want to look cute. It’s the perfect balance of both! It’s my go-to coat for Blowing Rock in the winter because it transitions easily from blistery walks to dinner at the pub.
