I used to love the taste of margarita mix so much that when I was underage, I would drink it plain. I once drank an entire pitcher of mix while involved in a heated Wii tennis battle with my family – little did I know it was actually the real thing. Needless to say, my taste for margaritas was never quite the same. However, I recently stumbled across this recipe, and it looked so light and refreshing that I decided it was time for a second try. Turns out, grapefruit is the perfect addition to a classic margarita. It was slightly bitter at first – so add more or less simple syrup (or substitute agave) depending on your taste preferences. Either way, it’s a quick and easy drink to whip up to celebrate Cinco de Mayo tonight.
Ingredients (serves 2)
1 lime for wedges (optional)
juice of 2 limes
juice of 1 grapefruit
1/2 c white tequila
1/2 c orange liquor (I used triple sec)
simple syrup to taste
sea salt for rimming
Wet rim of glass with a lime wedge. Turn glass upside down into a pile of sale and rub to cover rim.
Mix all ingredients in a cocktail shaker and divide between two ice filled glasses. Finish with lime wedge and enjoy.
